But, why use multi-page forms in WordPress?

Why Add a Multipage Form in WordPress?

As we mentioned above, multi-page forms are split across multiple pages. Adding more steps to a form may seem counter-intuitive, but it can actually increase form conversion rates.

Multi-page forms reduce friction for users who have to make too many choices at once. Simple options make each step of the form less overwhelming, and progress bars encourage users to continue and complete the form.

Since you've designed your form to improve completion rates, you'll be less likely to experience form abandonment. And with the use of conditional logic, you can serve different pages to users based on their responses, which will make it easier to gather the information you need.

Now that you know why using multi-page forms is ideal for user experience, Let's move on to creating a form in WordPress.

So let's start with the first step, which is to create a new form.

Step 1: Create a new form in WordPress

The first thing to do is to install and activate the WPForms plugin. If you don't know how, you can follow this step by step guide to install WordPress plugins for beginners.

With WPForms you can split any type of form into multiple parts, so let's go ahead and create a Contact form simple.

Go to the menu WPForms -> Add to create a new form and display the available templates.

Then, on this page, name your form, type multi-page Contact Form in the search field located in the left sidebar. then hover over the result of your search and click on the button Use the template.

WPForms will open the form template in the drag and drop form builder for you to edit.

As you can see, the form is empty, so we'll start dragging fields into it. We are going to drop the following fields:

  • Name
  • Email
  • Comment or message

You can add fields to the form by dragging them from the left column to the right column. Simply click on any form field to edit the content and drag it to rearrange its position.

If you want to add more than one Contact form to your WordPress website, you can also create the following types of forms with WPForms:

  • Inquiry Form
  • Online order form
  • type form style form
  • File upload form

Most of these types of forms are longer than standard contact forms, so breaking them up into multiple steps can improve conversions.

Now that you know how to get started, let's learn how to divide our form into parts.

Step 2: Divide your form into parts

Once you've customized your form and added the fields you need, add the field Jump to page to divide your form into different pages.

To do so, look under the Sophisticated Fields header and drag the form field Jump to page in the right panel.

Drop the field on your form where you want it to split.

Repeat this for each section where you want to split your form into another page. From there, continue customizing your form by adding the fields you need to populate it.

Although WPForms lets you add as many forms as you want, it's crucial to avoid overwhelming users with too much information. This can cause them to abandon your form, which is the opposite of what you want to achieve.

Step 3: Customize your form's progress bar

To increase the flow of your form, you can add a progress bar. A progress bar shows people the different sections of your form and is a great visual indicator of how much work remains to be done.

WPForms comes with 3 different progress indicator bars for multi-page forms which are as follows:

  1. Connectors – Connecting bars and page titles for each step of your form.
  2. Cercles – Numbered circles and page titles for each step of the form.
  3. Progress bar – User progress indicator as they complete the form steps.

To change the progress bar and page title of the first page of your multi-page form, click the field First page break.

You will then see a new panel where you can choose the type of progress for your form. In this area you can also change the color used to highlight the progress indicator if desired.

If you select the options cercles ou connectors, you can also edit the page title. This helps users know which part of the form they are on, so they don't get lost. But if you prefer not to, a standard progress bar will be shown to users to guide them through filling out your form.

Then you can edit the button Next page and text, which takes users to the next page of your form.

To do so, click the button Next  of your page, You can modify the label of the button in the left column.

  • Description of the form – Add a description to your form for reference.
  • Submit button text – Edit your submit button text.
  • Enable spam protection  – Enable anti-spam option to prevent spammers from sending unwanted submissions.

When your settings are configured, click Save.

Step 5: Set your form notifications

Notification settings in WPForms, sending an email when a form is submitted on your WordPress website.

You can find notification settings by clicking Settings -> Notifications.

If you don't turn off form notifications, you'll receive an email for every form submitted on your website.

On the other hand, you can use smart tags to send an email to people who fill out your form. Smart tags are a great way to let them know that their form has been completed correctly and that you have received it.

It's even better to use this feature on long forms with multiple steps, as they may take longer to fill out. In addition, it saves users from wandering around if everything went well. For more help, you can see the documentation on setting up form notifications here.

When you're done setting up your notifications, move on to setting up your form confirmation message.

Step 6: Set your form confirmation message

Form confirmation messages are short messages displayed to users when they have submitted a form on your website. It's a great way to let people know that their form is being processed and what steps need to be taken.

There are 3 types of confirmation messages in WPForms which are:

  1. Message – Simple message informing users that their form has been submitted.
  2. Show page – Send users to another page, such as a thank you page after submitting their form.
  3. Go to URL (redirect) – Send website visitors to another website after form submission.

To configure your confirmation message, click Settings -> Confirmation.

Then choose the type of message you want to display to your visitors after completing your form. For this tutorial, we will select Message.

Now customize the text of the message according to your needs and click on Save when you are satisfied.

You are now ready to add your form to WordPress.
