When you're not like me and you're afraid of brute force, you take the necessary measures. I have one WordPress blog and for a few days already, Akismet showed me nearly 10 abusive login attempts in two days. So even though I have a super complex password, I can't help but worry.
Google Authenticator to the rescue
Have you ever heard of the Double authentication ? This is, in the words of Wikipedia, an identification procedure that requires the concatenation of at least two authentication factors. It is no longer enough just to have a user name and a password, but also a second step must be completed.
Google Authenticator is a service that allows you to add two-factor authentication to websites, and it's also a service that works with WordPress. It allows you to log into your site by entering an application-generated code, usually assigned to a QR code, which you will have to scan with your phone. I'm not telling you more about it yet.
In this tutorial, I will show you how to add double authentication on your WordPress blog.
Install the Google Authenticator plugin on WordPress
The first thing to do is to install and activate the plugin Google Authenticator on WordPress. You can also install the plugin directly from your dashboard. By performing a search « Google Authenticator"
Once it's done, navigate to your WordPress profile.
From this page, be sure to click "Activate", then click on " Show / Hide QR Code". What QR code, we will scan it with the app Google Authenticator. Remember to save your changes while updating the profile.
Install the Android Google Authentificator app
To use this service, you must have an android device.
Now you need to log into the Play Store and download the app Google Authenticactor
From this page, you must click on install.
For those who have an Apple device, you can also install the app Google Authenticator available on iTunes.
The process of using the application will be the same with that on Android.
Once the application is installed on your WordPress blog, you must launch the application. The first window of the application will display an interface similar to this. All you need to do is simply tap “Start Setup”.
The second step will invite you to do two things:
- Scan a barcode
- enter a key
For this tutorial, we will focus on the barcode to scan. So tap "Scan a barcode".
After scanning this code, every time you want to log in to your blog, you will need to specify that code provided by the application, which is generated randomly.
Remember that the code expires, so be sure to log in before it expires.
On WordPress, you will find a new field in the login page.
It is on this new field that you will have to enter the code generated by Google Authenticator. It really is that simple.
That's it for this tutorial. Feel free to share it with your friends on your favorite social networks. If you have any questions, then ask them in the forms comments.
For my part, the extensions do not work, they are completely obsolete due to the fact that we do not have to fill in the field supposed to provide more security ... LOL
