Last night, I received another message from one of my students, and he wanted to know what the difference was between the sale and the marketing. Because he's not the only one asking me the question and even less the only one who wants to understand the difference between selling and making marketing, so I thought a little explanation was in order.
Let's start with Selling ...
The "sale" is an agreement by which a person called "the seller" assigns, to another person called "the buyer", his rights of ownership on a thing or a value belonging to him.
To sell is to exchange goods or services for something of value. Basically every time the money changes hands. In reality, it is much more than that. The art of selling is the ability to influence others in the way they think and act. Basically it's the art of persuasion.
If you think it's a little shady what I say, then do not worry. We all use persuasion techniques every day, whether we are aware of it or not. As long as we get others to do or say things we want, then we sell in some way. But hey, there should still be money in the middle. Because persuasion alone is not selling.
To sell you need:
- Know your product and / or service
- Know who he is talking to and what problem he is solving
- Make an irresistible offer (features - price - quality - bonus - support - money back guarantee - etc…)
What about marketing ?
Most entrepreneurs are generally mistaken when it comes to defining internet marketing and even outside. They think marketing and sales are one and the same, but it's FALSE!
Marketing is getting your target market to desire your product and / or service. The marketing of a product is its promotion and not its sale. Beyond a simple promotion, you should know that marketing finds its strength in targeting.
Communication is better when it is targeted. If a good message is addressed to the bad person, so it becomes bad, but if a wrong message is addressed to the good personthen he becomes necessarily good and efficient at the same time.
The application must exist. Instead of addressing everyone, you'd better address those who need you and what you have to offer. These are ready to lend you their ears. You need their attention to sell.
To do marketing you need to:
- Know and understand your target
- Find the best way to communicate with her
- Choose the best tools to facilitate this communication
Without an existing market, there is no targeting and without targeting there is no effective marketing, and without effective marketing, there is simply no sales so no money or lucrative business.
Selling needs marketing to exist and generate revenue, but marketing does not need selling to exist.
You can ensure the promotion of a good product without selling it.
Do you see the difference now?
I am delighted with your answer. According to my thoughts, marketing is the set of techniques for the design of actions to properly offer goods and services on the market while the sale consists in exchanging a good in return by means of the money by convincing the buyer by arguments.
thank you for the contribution I have a degree in Marketing and Strategy and I would like to become a resource person in Marketing. How to do?
please
What does your article understand that an online sale should be addressed to the right person even the way that it promotes itself bad but as you said at the beginning of the article you have to convince the prospects bought the product and although the two steps are useful for selling online, it cannot be past one for the benefit of another
Hello Thierry,
It is always a pleasure to read you.
I think what you say is fundamental:
“The demand must exist. Instead of reaching out to everyone, you are better off reaching out to those who need you and what you have to offer. They are ready to listen to you… you just need their attention to sell. "
And I can't help but draw the parallel with network marketing.
The traditional method is to make a list of the names of all the people we know to introduce them to our company, and most of the people we talk to will not be interested.
Precisely because when we talk about network marketing to everyone, we are not targeting our prospects.
Working on the net from home has a huge advantage, because people who listen are in demand for information, training or in search of a company.
Thanks again for the quality of your articles,
See you soon
Sylvie
Good evening Sylvie,
I don't know many who would have bothered to repost their comment after deleting (by mistake) their comment.
Thank you and this gesture touches me enormously.
Sincerely,
Thierry
The word marketing is often linked to the words "relationship marketing" However, in my humble opinion, marketing implies sales whether it is traditional (at the merchant of your neighborhood or your city) or simply oneline sales.
The word "relational" includes relation. Who says relation means a cordial exchange between two people.
I think you all know the famous phrase: why we have two ears, why we have two eyes, why we have only one mouth.
But we have two ears because we must first know how to listen to the person in front of us, we have two eyes to better visualize what they are saying to us and only after that we talk about the subject we wanted to address!
So to do good marketing, we need to be within reach of the people we meet on a daily basis. Following the problems she brings up, we must see if we have a solution to help her.
Finally, it is important to establish good relationships and to know how to listen to others.
cordially
ANNE MARIE
Thank you for this contribution Marie,
You are right to point out that marketing is based on the (sincere) relationship with potential customers. I also agree that targeted marketing is one that first identifies the needs of a layer of people and then speaks to those people with language they can understand. It is also the one who emphasizes that we have the solution to their problem.
In short, marketing on and off the internet is not only promoting a product, it is also offering a solution adapted to the needs of prospects.
Thanks again for your contribution.
Sincerely,
Thierry
a big thank you for your answer and your appreciation
I always read you with great pleasure because this way I have answers to my questions
so i can go ahead

Hello Thierry,
Ok for your article, but that's a bit reductive.
Indeed, marketing is important on the internet and off line,
but this is only one step to sell.
Why, on the Internet, says on Letter of Sale and not Letter of Marketing?
If the Letter of Sale is not good, the conversion is Less Good!
Selling is offering the Solution, the Product that meets your needs
of the Interlocutor;
Besides, we do not say: "There is no bad product in itself, there is only
Bad targets.
I wanted to make this little complement.
cordially
Jean-Pierre
Hello Jean-Pierre
Thank you for your comment and welcome to join us.
No, I don't think it's reductive because the “sales letter” uses persuasion and I'm talking about selling as a persuasion technique.
Yes I agree with you that selling is offering the solution, but as you point out so well
Which always comes back to persuasion and not promotion. And I believe I made this distinction in this article ...
Otherwise thank you for the contribution.
Sincerely,
Thierry
Hello Thierry,
Very good article, simple and clear and it is true that in France the distinction between sales and marketing is more difficult to understand than in the United States. Once you understand how to market, then you no longer need to sell, and conversely, selling without marketing is a painful ordeal. Thank you for this reminder. Best regards. Armelle
Hello armelle,
you are right to point out that in the United States, the difference between marketing and sales is better understood than in France. Especially in the field of network marketing where some copies without understanding ...
Thank you for your comment…

Thierry
