According to Einstein:

what is good is not always popular, and what is popular is not always good.

Is this the case with WooCommerce?

For those who don't yet know, WooCommerce is a WordPress plugin, and I hope you don't ask yourself the following questions anymore:

  • Can WordPress manage e-commerce?
  • Is it scalable?
  • Is not it just for blogs?
  • What if WooCommerce is popular, isn't it expensive?

These questions and more are often in our thoughts when we begin. And some are wondering how to plan things to use WooCommerce as an eCommerce plugin?

My answer will always be the same: I think WooCommerce is a complete enough solution to get you started.

Let's see if we can agree on a few good reasons to consider choosing WooCommerce.

Why WooCommerce?

1 # Because everyone does it?

It's true, it's the worst reason out there, and I can hear my mom asking if I wanted to jump off a cliff just because "everyone else is doing it". And if for that I can say no, I know that I have done a lot of things in life just because I trust the opinions of others (or what they did).

While some people give the title “built with” a high mark, the thing to note is not the pure numbers, but the changes over time. WooCommerce continues to grow dramatically. Nowadays, nearly 42% of online stores use WooCommerce, and that's no coincidence.

That is why, even if what others think is not always correct, you agree with me that "many people cannot be wrong".

2 # developers are easy to find

The nature of WooCommerce's growth is such that today a lot of people have experience building stores with WooCommerce, even us here on BlogPasCher. We do not all have the same experience.

This does not necessarily mean the same when it comes to other eCommerce plugins for WordPress, or even for other open source solutions.

On Upwork, for example, when you search for people who have over 100 hours of Volusion experience in the last 6 months, the number of independent developers available is 450. The same criteria on WooCommerce gives you over 3000.

3 # Developers are easy to find and…

When you search for developers with much more experience (1000+ hours) who are currently active on WooCommerce jobs, you will find thousands of developers available. Depending on the filters you use, you will find 2-3 times more WooCommerce experts than Volusion or Big Commerce.

And it's on sites like Upwork. If you are looking for WooCommerce developers, you can find more of them at Codeable.io. And with these people, they can help you build all kinds of sites.

4 # All integrations offered by WooCommerce

When you start looking through every eCommerce platform out there, and decide to consider whether it makes sense to choose WooCommerce, you'll find that everyone is using it. Everyone has created a payment gateway for WooCommerce. Everyone has already done it (because of these numbers above) To sell their products with WooCommerce.

This is the advantage of being the big player in the market.

But it's not just integrations. It's also about features. Features that you can choose to add or not, depending on your site's needs.

The total number of extensions available for WooCommerce is difficult to calculate but this number is much larger than the other solutions available.

What about self-hosted platforms?

Of course, you can use these solutions. It's silly not to look at platforms like Shopify or Big Commerce.

Shopify has 70 payment gateways. Big Commerce has about half. If payment gateways are your thing, and they have what you need, then you are fixed. Otherwise, you can count on WooCommerce and more than 140 available payment gateways.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is another thing to consider when looking at hosted platforms. While the benefits can be potentially speed and performance (especially if you are using a poor performing WordPress hosting service), the ability to really work in the optimization may be limited, depending on which hosted platform you will be using. And not all of them offer the full range of options that WooCommerce puts at your disposal.

You absolutely must consult the hosted platforms. This will allow you to have clear ideas of what you need to start your site. This will probably help you determine which platform is right for you.
