Writers tend to think seriously about their title. For online content, titles are important to readers and search engines. This makes them doubly important!
If you use WordPress and the Yoast SEO plugin, you insert the article title in the article title input field. Your title will appear as an H1 header at the top of your post.
But, Yoast SEO also provides opportunities to edit and improve your SEO title separately. Why is that ? What is the difference ? And how should you edit your SEO title? You will find out in this tutorial.
But before, if you have never installed WordPress discover How to Install a WordPress Blog in 7 Steps et How to search, install and activate a WordPress theme on your blog
Then back to why we are here.
Two input fields
For some of you this will be obvious, but let's take a look at where to find the input fields for the article title - as well as the H1 title - and SEO title. The input field for titre de publicare can be found at the top of the page or in the post editor on WordPress.
You can find the input field of the SEO title in the Yoast SEO metabox, which appears below the post entry field. To change the title of the SEO, you have to click on the Edit Snippet button. The preview of the extract will then open. The preview of the extract offers you three input fields. The first is the input field to edit your SEO title.

Below the input field you will (usually) see a green bar. That is to say, it will be green if your SEO title is well optimized. If it's orange or red, you should try to improve it. As you can see, the SEO title has all kinds of "%" signs. Don't let that scare you, I'll explain that to you a little further down.
Goal of the title of the post and the title of the referencing
It is important to realize that your SEO title does not have the same purpose as the title of your article or page. The title of your article is intended for people who are already on your website. It's telling them what your post or page is.
VOur SEO title, on the other hand, is for people who are not yet on your website. It will be displayed to people on the search engines. This will be the title of your snippet on Google - that's why it's shown in the snippet preview.
The whole point of SEO is to get people to click the snippet, go to your website, and read your article or buy your product.
What does Yoast SEO do automatically?
Without configuration, Yoast SEO will generate an SEO title based on the title of your article, the H1 title. It will also put the name of your website in the SEO title. If you do not put the name of your website in your SEO title, Google will do it for you.

Yoast SEO will make sure your title isn't too long - you'll get a notification if your title is too long. Yoast uses this bullet to separate the article title from the website name, but you can also use a hyphen, for example.
You can define how you want to generate your SEO title in the titles and meta section of Yoast SEO. If you do this, all of your post titles will be generated in the exact same way.
But, as described above, you can also edit the SEO title separately for an article. In the next paragraph, we will explain in which cases you would like to do this.
Should you change the SEO title?
Personally, I never edit the SEO title of a separate article. I write a post and pick a title that works for people who are already on our website, as well as people who see the snippet in search engines. The parameters for automatically generating titles on Yoast SEO are more than sufficient.
If I want to adapt my title, maybe because I forgot to use the focus keyword in my post title, I always edit the post title. The SEO title will change with it. For articles like this, it works great.
However, if you are selling a product for example, the post or page title might not be the best SEO title. Maybe you would like to mention the price of the product in your SEO title, but not in the H1 of your page. In these cases, SEO title editing is required.
How do you edit the SEO title?
How do you edit the SEO title? And what are the weird %% signs in the input field? How can you use them?
The SEO title model
As described above, Yoast SEO automatically generates SEO titles for you. You can adapt this template title to your liking in the titles and meta section of Yoast SEO. Here's what the %% symbols are for.
We call these symbols %% title %%, the magic variables. These magic variables take certain information and put it together to form the SEO title. So if you type %% title %% in the SEO template input field, the title of an article or page will appear.
The %% sep %% symbol will take the sign of the separator you chose - like the little ball we are using - and add it to the SEO title.

For a message with a different SEO title
If you are working on a post and want to change the SEO title, you can just click on the SEO title in the Yoast SEO meta box below your post. The magic variables will disappear and you will be able to edit the SEO title just for this article.
Note that you can always use the magic variables for a separate post! For example, if you just want to change the first part of the title, but keep the separator and website name, you can create an SEO title like: '[custom post title] %% sep %% %% site name% % '.

Your SEO title and your article title both serve a different purpose. In many cases, you can use your article title as the basis for your SEO title. Yoast SEO will generate a nice SEO title based on your article title. In some cases, it is better to customize the SEO title. You can use the magic variables to create this custom SEO title.
