Why Bulk Upload Media to WordPress Using an FTP Client

WordPress' default media upload tool allows you to upload multiple files at once. You can do this by clicking on the " Add a media »When writing an article or by clicking on Media »Add.

You can select multiple photos, images, audio files and even video to download and WordPress will do the rest.

However, this method may not work sometimes. You may encounter a number of problems, including the file download limit.

An easier alternative is to download the files using an FTP client. However, WordPress does not recognize files downloaded by FTP, and it will not display them in the administration area.

Fortunately, there is a way around this. Let's take a look at how to easily download media files using an FTP client, and how to make them available on WordPress.

Mass download of media files in WordPress by FTP

First, you need to connect to your WordPress site using an FTP client. If you haven't already, check out our guide on how to to upload files to your WordPress website via FTP .

Once you are connected to your website via FTP, navigate to the folder

/ Wp-content / uploads /

In the Downloads folder, you will see folders organized by year and month. This is how WordPress stores media files by default. You can download your media files according to the current year and to the folder for the current month.

If it does not exist, you can create it. For example, 2018 for the current year and in this folder you can create a new folder 01 for the month of January.

It may take some time to download your files depending on the file size and your speed of your connection.

Once you have downloaded all your images, audio, video, or any other media file supported by WordPress, you are ready to import them to WordPress.

How to make your downloads via FTP visible on WordPress

Even if you have downloaded the files to your website's server, WordPress does not recognize them automatically.

When you upload a file using the default WordPress media uploader, WordPress saves the file information to the database. It then displays these files by fetching information from your WordPress database.

Since these files were not uploaded by the traditional interface, WordPress will not have stored them in the database.

Let's settle this.

The first thing to do is to install and activate the plugin Media from FTP. For more details, see our step-by-step guide on way to install a WordPress plugin.

After activating the plugin, you need to visit Media From FTP »Search & Register. By default, the plugin will look at

/ Wp-content / uploads /

and will display all the media files it contains.

You can also browse the folders by clicking on the menu

/ Wp-content / uploads /

It allows you to sort files by type or extension.

Once you have located the files you uploaded via FTP, simply click on the box next to them and then click on the 'Update the media'.

The plugin will start to save your imported media in the WordPress media library. You will see the progress on the screen for each file.

Once done, you can visit the page Media »Library to see all your imported files.

Now you can go ahead and add those images, audio files, and other media to your WordPress posts and pages.
