With WordPress, it's easy to write your content right in the visual editor with direct styling preview, but the process isn't necessarily the fastest.

Anyone who has experience in creating content from the editor, knows that it is always necessary to use the mouse constantly in order to make a better layout of your text (unless you master keyboard shortcuts).

This is very suitable for users who take the time to get things done. Yet if time is something you like to preserve, then I'll show you how to work much faster.

But before, if you have never installed WordPress discover How to install a WordPress blog in 7 steps et How to search, install and activate a WordPress theme on your blog

Then back to why we are here.

Le Markdown is a lightweight and intuitive markup language that offers a faster way to layout your posts, pages, and comments. Although it takes a while to get used to, with the latter, you (almost) never need to use your mouse.

A short story about the MarkDown

In an effort to create a solution for easily writing and formatting text on the web, John Gruber and Aaron Swartz created the Markdown in 2004. It is based only on plain text and does not require learning a complicated code or shortcuts, which means that even newbies to WordPress can learn to use MarkDown.

When using Markdown on your WordPress website, which we will cover later in this tutorial, you will be able to enter specific characters around the text you want to format.

For example, to italicize text, all you need to add is an asterisk character on both ends of the text. The text in italics * * will appear when the article is published on your website.

Once you are familiar with Markdown, you will be able to cut down on the time you spend formatting your WordPress posts. The hardest part is just memorizing the characters to implement for each style, which becomes second nature with enough practice.

How to use the MarkDown on WordPress

The best way to learn Markdown is to actually start using it yourself. So, rather than listing all the different shortcuts, which you can access on the WordPress quick reference page, here is a basic example:

As you can see quite easily, adding ## before a text will wrap it with the "h2" tags.

Likewise, wrapping text with * will be equivalent to wrapping text with the "em" tag, wrapping text with ** will be equivalent to making use of the "strong" tag.

This is what this content looks like when published.

If you start typing these shortcuts directly on the editor of your WordPress blog, you will be able to see that they work when you use them and hit enter to start a new paragraph due to editor improvements that were introduced with WordPress.

How to get the most out of Markdown

Markdown may seem difficult to anyone who is not really proficient with code, but in reality anyone who can use a keyboard can easily learn to use it.
