Why find out who is hosting a website?

All websites on the internet needWeb hosting. This is where all the files for a website are stored. Website hosting is different from a domain name. A domain name is the address of a website, for example blogpascher.com.

It is not that difficult to find out who is hosting a website because this information is publicly available.

There are several scenarios where you may need to find the serviceWeb hosting behind a website.

  • A WordPress developer has created a website for you. They forgot to tell you who the web host is, or you lost the details.
  • You set up your WordPress website a long time ago. You no longer remember who is hosting it.
  • Have you seen a website that is fast and works well. You want to know who the web host is so that you can use their services too.
  • Another website that  steal your content, and you want to send a DMCA takedown notice to their host.

There are several ways to find out who is hosting a website. We'll show you the two easiest ways to quickly find out which hosting company a website is using.

Method 1. Use a theme finder

The tool WordPress Theme Detector is a great way to detect which WordPress theme a website is using. It also tells you who is hosting this website. To use it, just go to the page WordPress Theme Detector and type in the URL (domain name) of the website:

Click on the button 'WEBSITE ANALYZE' to continue. Within seconds, you will see details on the website. This includes the name of the hosting provider:

Here are some names you may see coming up:

  • Unified Layer: EIG (Endurance International Group) hosts these websites. EIG is the company behind Bluehost et HostGator. They also own several other small brands ofWeb hosting.
  • New Dream Network, LLC: DreamHost
  • MediaTemple: Media temple is a web hosting company owned by GoDaddy

In some cases, the theme finder may not be able to tell you the web host. For example, when a website uses a CDN service or a website firewall.

These services route website traffic through their own servers, which means that all web host finder tools will show them as the hosting provider.

A popular CDN service is Cloudflare. They offer a free CDN service which is used by many websites.

You can also see Sucuri, which is a website security and firewall service with its own CDN servers.

If the theme finder does not give you a clear answer, then the second method in this guide may help. She will show you how to dig deeper to find the real hosting company behind a website.

Method # 2: Using WHOIS Tools To Find Who Is Hosting A Website

Another way to find out about a website host is to look at their WHOIS information. WHOIS is like a public directory. It allows you to research "who is" responsible for a website.

What is Whois information?

Most domain names on the Internet are managed by a global organization called ICANN. It maintains a public directory of all website data which also includes information on where a website can be hosted.

This is publicly available information, and there are a lot of tools you can use to find whois information on any website on the Internet.

First of all you need to go to WHOis.net. Then just type in the website URL to search for it. You will see a list of information, starting with the domain name:

In this case, the host is Dreamhost. To find out which web host the nameserver refers to, just search for the nameserver on Google.

Again, you may not always be able to find the host's information. Nameservers can be configured for a CDN, such as Cloudflare.

Other Ways to Find a Website Host

These methods take a little longer. However, they are worth a try if you are unable to find the host using the quick methods above.

For your own website, you can check your billing records. You've probably been billed for web hosting.

You can also contact whoever set up your website. If you are unable to contact them, check any information they have sent you in the past.

It can be more difficult to find out who is hosting someone else's website.

First of all, you can search for information on the website to get information about the web host. It can be on the page About us or in the Footer.

If you still cannot find any information, you can contact the owner or publisher of the website.

You will normally find a Contact form on most websites you can use for this. Explain that you like their website and wonder who hosts it.
