Personally, I'm a fan of the use of humor and pop culture references in the Content marketing. I don't necessarily think it fits every occasion, and I don't think everyone will understand what it is, which is why we do research before creating websites.

That said, including a play on words or a reference to your favorite movie in your website article is fine when everything fits in with your brand's style or voice.

Emojis gifs memes willy wonka meme

Well, that's not something I'm sure about. But again, if your website is directly targeting a younger age group who naturally incorporates these types of elements into their dialogue, it might be a good idea to go this route.

Obviously, there has been a lot of research into what kind of effect these modern hieroglyphics have on social media and email marketing, but there isn't much on the subject that indicates whether these elements are good or bad for websites.

Since I think people's preference for visual content and shorter engagements over large amounts of text lends itself really well to this type of content, that's what I'd like to try to understand today.

Then back to why we are here.

GIFs, Emojis and Memes, My God!

There's something very appealing to brands that can stay on the cutting edge in terms of design and marketing, and I think those types of visuals create an interesting juxtaposition between the two.

But there is nothing that guarantees that a well-placed punny memorial or smiley emoji will be well received by your audience. So how can you effectively use these in web design, if at all?

4 WordPress plugins to add emoticons and emojis to a blog to discover absolutely

Browsing the web to see if emoji, GIF or "memes" might be appropriate for website design, I came across this article called " Laugh It Up Â».

I've found a lot of stuff like this on the web that talks about the healing power of laughter, usually in the context of relationships or workplaces. But if humor works in other areas of our lives, why wouldn't it work in our digital communications with consumers?

According to the article, laughter can:

  • Release endorphins, give people an improved sense of well-being and happiness.
  • Create a closeness between individuals and your business.
  • Ease the pain.

Now, if these three side effects are not what we hope to accomplish by going into business in the first place, I don't know what other reason can we use. Of course, not every business or website can claim the power to cure physical illnesses, but we are all trying to appease some sort of "painThat customers experience.

What if laughter is the first step in showing them that you understand what they are going through?

Let's say you run a digital bookstore and you know that your prices are a little higher than what customers can find on Amazon. However, you are about to launch a semi-annual sale and you want to inform them of the good deals. You can create or borrow (with a credit, of course) a meme like this and add it to the blog post by making the announcement:

Even for bookstore

If you can find a way to use relevant humor snippets on your website, can you imagine what that might do for engagement? You can use a funny GIF to disarm readers when they analyze a long blog post.

You can inject humor into a popup using a meme. Or you could infuse your copy with emojis.

It's like everything else in web design: giving them a reason to stop, engage, and connect with your brand, and you can just earn a loyal customer for life.

How to use EMOJIS, GIF and MEMES?

emoji

According to a recent study, emojis are used by 92% of people, which makes them incredibly attractive for website design. Considering how often you have to factor in the learning curve with some users, it would be good to rely on a design element that most people are already familiar with.

There are other benefits of using emojis too:

  • They are great in terms of minimalism since you can say more with a simple icon.
  • A study in 2007 showed that emoticons (the flat smiley face equivalent to emojis) have a purpose similar to that of body language. Essentially, improve the understanding of spoken or written words.
  • There have also been studies that show a correlation between emotion and emoji use.

Now, on the downsides of using emojis in content, here's what you need to know:

  • Emojis can be recognized by the majority of people, but that doesn't mean they are universally accepted as a form of business communication.
  • Using emojis can be too distracting in content.
  • You should also be careful to place them in titles or metadata. Google will only display emojis when they deem them relevant.

GIF

Here are some ways that websites can use GIFs on their website:

  • To "animate" an image that demonstrates progress or movement with respect to history.
  • To describe short steps in a process – like a how-to – that prevent the reader from scrolling down the page or viewing a long video.

MEMES

Technically, the memes aren't just images that include a quick riff on the original quote. In fact, an internet meme can be an image, a video, a hashtag, or even a website. The term originated in 1976 when Richard Dawkins used it to describe a type of biological evolution. This makes sense since memes are our way of disseminating an idea or image and looking at it as it changes from person to person.

I would say that the same ones can be used for the same exact reasons and the same means as the GIFs. The main difference is that memes are traditionally static, so they are a little easier to create.

I also think the memes have one additional use, and that's for strictly promotional purposes. If you remove the emphasis usually placed on them to be humorous, you can take a high resolution image and place a funny and memorable hashtag on top to promote your services or website content.

Where to create Emojis, GIF and MEMES

For emojis, they are supported by WordPress. For the same, you can use MEMEGenerator. For GIF captures, I usually use LiceCap.
