She's the mother of all jobs, isn't she?

Start a blog, find an audience and watch the euros go by! I'm sure some blog owners sometimes dream of quitting their jobs in order to devote themselves to their blog full time.

Except full-time blogging isn't as easy as it seems. Like so many “dream” jobs, the reason we think it's easy is because successful people make it look easy. But the reality is quite different.

Tip on writing content

So blogging can be hard work, and it's not always glamorous. But if you have a subject that you love to talk about, write about, or learn about, then this could be a great career for you.

In this first round of posts, I'll start by addressing one of the key factors in becoming a successful blogger: find your niche. I'm going to give you some tips on finding a niche that works for you and can help you make money.

If you have never installed WordPress, discover How to Install a WordPress Blog in 7 Steps et How to search, install and activate a WordPress theme on your blog

But back to why we are here.

What is a Niche?

The Oxford English dictionary gives two relevant definitions of the word "niche". First of all, the one that concerns you:

«A comfortable or suitable position in life or employment».

This could be what leads you to launch or develop a blog to success – find something that suits you, that pushes you to give the best of yourself, which satisfies you and which is of course less stressful.

The other definition is about your audience:

«A specialized segment of the market for a particular type of product or service».

It's about your audience, who they are, what market they're in, and what they're looking for. If you don't take this into account, it will be at your own risk.

Find your niche

So identifying the niche of your blog means you have to understand two things:

  • Your Topic interest, specialty or hobby you have knowledge of.
  • Your audience : a segment of the population that shares your passion.

If you just focus on yourself, you will be hard pressed to make any money. But if you only focus on the audience, you will soon run out of ideas for the blog. So the trick is to find a topic that you are familiar with and want to create content on it that will match your audience. The audience doesn't have to be huge (if it is a small but extremely dedicated audience this could be a bonus).

Find a topic you like

Let's start with you and how to find a topic on which you can produce content. It doesn't have to be written; you could produce videos, podcasts, or photo galleries. Bloggers working in different media are becoming more common (and also successful).

And there are so many written-only blogs that using another medium helps you stand out and boost your search engine rankings.

Think about what interests you: hobbies, professional specialties or something you learn. This can be domestic (the experience of being a parent), Or professional (how to create a WordPress blog).

Here are our 4 steps to choose a profitable niche for your blog

The key is to be specific. So if you want to start a family life blog, find an angle. If you want a blog about website design, search for a specialty. Something interests you and ask yourself if there is an audience.

Unless you have an obvious passion, it makes sense to come up with some viable ideas so that you can reduce them when you start thinking about your audience. These ideas could relate to very different topics, it could also be different angles tackled on the same subject.

Understanding Your Audience

So you have ideas or a great idea, if you have already started your blog. Now think about your audience.

Be realistic and honest with yourself, and look for second (and third and fourth) opinions. Find out what is working and how your competition is doing. Don't worry if there are already other blogs on your topic (if you can provide a new angle or a new path, you will give something more to an already established niche).

If your blog has only a small potential audience, your blog is unlikely to be profitable. If you can expand this audience a little, then you increase your chances of making money.

But it is more likely that it is not always a good idea. It's tempting to start a blog on various topics, by documenting all of your experiences, ideas and opinions. But if your readers don't know what your blog is about, they won't come back.
