Why use phpMyAdmin to duplicate a database
WordPress stores all of your website content in the database. Almost all WordPress hosting companies offer MySQL as their database management software. You can interact with MySQL using command line tools, but it's not ideal for newbies.
PhpMyAdmin offers a web interface to manage your MySQL database. It can be used for manually back up your WordPress database , restore the administrator password ou move your website to a new server .
That being said, let's take a look at how to clone WordPress database using phpMyAdmin.
Duplicate / clone the WordPress database using phpMyAdmin
First of all, you need to go to your hosting account dashboard. Once connected, scroll to the Databases - DATABASES - section and click on the icon phpMyAdmin.
Don't worry if your cPanel dashboard looks a little different from our screenshots, or if your hosting company doesn't have a cPanel dashboard. You just need to locate the databases section and you will find the option to open phpMyAdmin.
This will bring you to the phpMyAdmin interface where you need to click on the Databases link at the top to continue.
On this screen you will see a list of available databases. You must click on your WordPress database in the list.
Then you will see the list of tables in your WordPress database. Click on the 'Operations' link on the main menu to continue.
Now you have to provide a name for the new database cloned in the zone « Copy the database to« . Make sure that the option 'Structure and data'is selected, then click on the' Go" page (in French).
PhpMyAdmin will now create a duplicate WordPress database for you. Once completed, you will see a success message.

Manually duplicate a WordPress database using phpMyAdmin
If you are on shared WordPress hosting, chances are your hosting company does not allow users to create databases directly from phpMyAdmin.

In this case, you will not be able to see the " Copy the database to On the operations page.
However, you can still export the existing database and then import it to a new database. To do this, go to phpMyAdmin in your cPanel dashboard.
After selecting your WordPress database, click the Export button on the main menu, and then select a custom method.
Then you need to scroll down to the section Output and check the option «Save output to file» .
Click on the button 'Go' to continue.
phpMyAdmin will export your WordPress database and send it to your browser as a .mysql file.
Then you need to create a new database where you can import this file. Visit the cPanel dashboard and click on the icon 'MySQL databases'.
On the next screen, enter a name for your new database and click the " Create a database " to continue.
Cpanel will create a new MySQL database. However, to use the database, you must assign it to a MySQL user.
Scroll down to the "Add a user to the databaseAnd select your MySQL username, then select your newly created database.
Then click the Add button to continue.
CPanel will now grant full MySQL user privileges on your newly created database.

Now that your new database is ready, you can go ahead and open phpMyAdmin from your cPanel dashboard.
You must select your newly created database, then click on the button importer in the main menu.
Then click the Choose File button to select the .mysql file that you downloaded earlier and click the " Go " to continue.
PhpMyAdmin will download the file from your computer and import your database. You will see a success message when finished.
