The settings page is divided into two tabs. First, you need to select the sidebar widgets you want to disable. Just check the box next to the widgets you don't want to use and click the button Save Changes.

You can now visit the page Appearance »Widgets to see the difference. All selected widgets will no longer be visible on the widget screen.
