Difference between Categories and Tags

Categories and tags are both WordPress taxonomies. They are used to group your articles in different ways.

Create categories in WordPress

To do this, go to the tab items > categories. In the new interface (screenshot reference above). You will configure the following settings:

• Name: determine the name of the category to create. It can represent any subject. For example, if your site deals with WordPress as a whole, you can divide your content into categories such as: WordPress Plugins, natural referencing, WooCommerce, WordPress installation…
• Slug: This area may or may not be filled. In any case, it does not prevent the creation of the category. The slug just represents the normalized version of your category. This can only contain lowercase letters, numbers or even symbols.
• Parent category: If you want the category you create to be the main one, mark in this section “none”. However, if you plan to create a subcategory, please specify the parent category. The one you are going to create will be called child category. As opposed to labels which are also taxonomies, categories allow you to create a certain hierarchy. This means that a category can include subcategories which in turn can also contain other subcategories.
• Description: In this area you can describe your category. It is simply a matter of evoking the reasons for the creation of the latter.

After filling in all the information, click on “add a new category”. It's finished, you can now classify articles there before their publications.

Create a subcategory

To create a subcategory in WordPress, the procedure remains relatively the same, except that here you must select a parent category. So, you need to go to the tab Articles> categories. Then fill in all the areas as was the case with the main category.

When you arrive at the parent category section, please click and select the category that will include the other. You can also describe it by going to the description area. Don't forget to click on “add a new category” to save it.

Edit a category or subcategory

Change default category
