WordPress.com now supports seamless integration between Google Photos and the WordPress media library.

Users can now connect their Google accounts to access their photos when inserting an image.

Google Photos has gained popularity due to its automatic tagless organization and free unlimited backup for photos and videos up to 16MP and 1080p HD. In May 2017, the service reported 500 million monthly users saving over 1,2 billion photos and videos per day.

While uploading images to WordPress.com, users can also take advantage of Google's smart image search features. The service is good enough at recognizing what's in your images and where they were taken, even if you haven't categorized them or added descriptions.

The new Google Photos integration is also available for Jetpack-enabled websites when posting through the WordPress.com interface. (It is not available on the self-hosted websites dashboard.)

Unfortunately, this experience is still buggy. After adding photos, WordPress.com does not appear to be able to save projects and it has not yet been possible to view the latest photos from last week.

Users should also note that when you authenticate with Google Photos, it will give access to the photos of each website that you have logged into that WordPress.com account. This access is however limited to the specific user logged in.

Multiple users on a website must each authenticate separately and can connect their own Google accounts. Users do not have access to each other's photos. It is also easy to revoke access via wordpress.com/sharing.

The new Google Photos feature has been very well received by WordPress.com users, as it saves them from the difficulty of downloading images from the service and then uploading them to their multimedia libraries.

This is not, however, as convenient for websites that are compatible with Jetpack, as it adds additional steps to the publishing process.

« Great functionality, but will it be available directly from self-hosted websites without using WordPress.com ? ", Asked a user.

« This cuts down so many steps in our post flow, but adds several more if we then need to log into WordPress.com to do so. Our admin setup is complex, so switching to editing here (WordPress.com) is not an option. We have several contributors who write directly and it would be nice if they could upload their images directly from their account«

A representative from WordPress.com confirmed that there are currently no plans to support a standalone version on Jetpack. They are, however, planning to support other services, such as Flickr, in the future.
