How to add a Mailchimp signup form to your WordPress site (in 4 steps)

To complete this tutorial you will need a Mailchimp account, so create one if you haven't already. You can then start creating your registration form and adding it to your site by following the steps below.

Step 1: Connect your Mailchimp account to WordPress

You will need an API key to connect Mailchimp to your WordPress website. To generate one, sign in to your Mailchimp account, then select your profile picture in the top right corner. Then go to Account> Extras> API Keys:

Under Your API keys, select Create a key. Mailchimp will then generate your API key:
A Mailchimp API key.
The easiest way to add this key to your WordPress account is to use a plugin such as Mailchimp for WordPress (MC4WP). After installing and activating it, go to MC4P> Mailchimp in your WordPress dashboard:
The WordPress settings of MC4WP.
Enter your API key in the corresponding field, then select Save changes. When making this connection for the first time, it is wise to click on the Renew Mailchimp lists button. This will update the configuration of your cached lists and ensure that you are working with the latest version of your Mailchimp data.

Step 2: Create your Mailchimp signup form

To add a signup form to your WordPress website, log into your Mailchimp dashboard and select the Public icon. You can then access Audience dashboard> Manage audience> Registration forms:
A mailing list in the Mailchimp dashboard.
Here you can choose to create a built-in form or a subscriber registration pop-up. You can also create a form using Mailchimp's Facebook integration feature:

Built-in forms are less intrusive, but they're also easier to ignore. Meanwhile, popups are a great way to grab the visitor's attention, but they can disrupt the browsing experience, especially on smaller screens like smartphones and tablets.

Even if you have a pop-up form for signing up new subscribers, it is also advisable to have a form embedded somewhere on your site. As such, this is the option we'll be focusing on for the purposes of this tutorial.

After choosing the type of form you want to use, you will have access to different layouts. As you explore these templates, Mailchimp will generate a preview based on the one you've currently selected:

For each layout, you will have access to various settings. For example, you can change the title that appears at the top of the Condensed disposition. You can also specify the width of the form:

It's worth spending some time exploring the different layouts and experimenting with the settings to see what effects you can create. When you're happy with how your Mailchimp signup form looks and works, you can add it to your website by copying its embed code.

Step 3: Display your Mailchimp signup form using a widget

You can now position this signup form anywhere on your website using its embed code. This includes adding your form to recurring items like your sidebar or footer. If you take this approach, visitors will be able to subscribe from any page on your website, which can help drive conversions:

You can add a Mailchimp signup form to your sidebar or footer using a custom HTML widget. To create one, go to Appearance> Widgets:
The WordPress widgets screen.
You can then select the Custom HTML widget and drag it to the area where you want to display your registration form. For example, you can drop the widget into the Lateral bar or Footer column. Note that your options may vary depending on your WordPress theme:

You can now paste your form's embed code from your Mailchimp account into the widget Contents area. At this point, you can also add a title, which will be displayed above your registration form:

Then click Save. Your registration form will now appear on your WordPress website.

Step 4: Add your one-page signup form using a custom HTML block

Alternatively (or in addition) you may want to choose exactly where your registration form appears. For example, you can create a dedicated page where visitors can subscribe to your mailing list.

You can also embed this form in your content, such as halfway through a blog post or landing page. This can grab the attention of visitors as they scroll through your content and can increase conversions.

To add your registration form to a specific page, open it to edit it and add a new one Custom HTML block:
The WordPress block editor.
Next, paste your Mailchimp embed code into the custom HTML block. You can now publish or update this page, and your registration form will appear in the location you specified. Simply repeat this process to present your form in multiple places on your WordPress website.

There are many factors that can convince visitors to subscribe to your mailing list. However, they all rely on you to lay the groundwork by creating a user-friendly and accessible registration form.
