Thanks to Steve Jobs and TED Talks, the presentations became another amazing performance…

If you are a marketing professional or about to become one, you will sooner or later have to make a presentation. So when that moment comes, you will have to make it exciting, catchy and informative at the same time.

In this article, we will share some secrets that will help your listeners remember your presentation for a very long time.

A good presentation follows its main objective, has a good script, a compelling story and a good design.

But what does that mean? Let’s stop at each point and be done.

Why do you need a good presentation?

Let's start with the goals. As a general rule, people say that their goal is "Inform the public about ..." or "Tell people that ...". But it does not work. After listening to the presentations with such a purpose, people forget them just after the coffee break. Ok, they listened to you and then? Why did you make this presentation?

Most likely, you want people to give their opinion or do something for themselves, change their mind after listening to your inspirational talk, buy your product, invest some money, whether they make a decision or whatever.

So, before you start preparing your slides, ask yourself the following questions:

  • What am I going to talk about?
  • What is the main idea that I want to reveal? Is it clear to people?
  • What is the audience and its level: will they understand the peculiarities of the subject or will it be necessary to be informed from the beginning?
  • Will people be able to apply some information from this presentation on that same day?
  • What emotions do I want to evoke in the audience? What emotions should people have after the presentation? This is extremely important for the last slide of the presentation.
  • What personal experience will help the public to convey ideas through examples?

Before you start creating your slides, graphics, text, and thinking, take some time to think. You should understand what should happen to people after your speech is over. By setting the goal, you can create the correct content.

5 types of presentations according to your objectives

#1 PRESENTATION-KNOWLEDGE

This type of presentation is useful to complement a website, but replace it. It provides listeners with brief information about a company or person, in the form of a movie synopsis.

Where to use: This type of presentation is good for lessons, meetings and letters.

Duration: 1-5 minutes.

Number of slides: less than 15.

Purpose: "to show how exactly this specialist / program / concept solves a specific problem".

#2 PRESENTATION OF SALE

Ideal for sending by email to customers or partners. It is not a business presentation in general, but a product or a special project.

Where to use: events, websites or letters.

Duration: 1-5 minutes.

Number of slides: Less than 15.

Purpose: "To convince the public that this product will save them 40% on its annual maintenance budget."

# 3 FUN PRESENTATION

Means of education and entertainment at the same time. This helps the speaker to grab the audience's attention. It's a good way to turn a complicated subject into something simple.

Where to use: Conferences or closed meetings

Duration: 45-100 minutes.

Number of slides: as many as needed.

Goal: "Attract more permanent residents to the club by focusing on relaxation".

#4 EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATION

Such a presentation is good for instructions. One slide - one action.

Where to use: training and workshops.

Duration: 60-150 minutes.

Number of slides: max 1 slide per minute.

Goal: "Develop skills in an atmosphere of concentration".

#5 PRESENTATION OF MOTIVATION

This presentation can be used to help the speaker increase the audience's emotions during the course of the story.

Where to use: inspirational conferences and events

Duration: 20-60 minutes.

Number of slides: Max 1 slide per minute.

Purpose: "To say what makes me believe in myself after another failure".

The number of slides depends on the way you speak, the timing of the event, the presentation format (with a speaker or by mail). Usually people perceive 1 slide per minute. There is no rule of thumb for a perfect presentation, but the shorter the better.

How to make a powerful and exciting scenario for a presentation

We want people to remember the information we give them in a presentation for as long as possible. They will probably forget all the data on the slides, but they will definitely remember a good story.

A good presentation means an emotional bond with an audience. This can be achieved by means of narration. Even a boring presentation with tons of data can be presented as a good story. So let's talk about how to create a good storyline for your presentation.

Creating a scenario is not easy. The following diagram will help you create your story. This is the common path of all history:

Please note that there is nothing design yet. Only the story. Although there is no design, it's easy to correct your story and make changes, which is why the story is everything. So when you have a script, maybe take a break for a day. Make a presentation to someone, think of it as a usability test. This will help you add or remove something from your idea set.

The key factor to a great speech

Have you ever noticed that one speech can make people yawn while another makes them extremely involved? Neuroscientists have proven that during presentation, the same parts are activated in the brains of speakers and listeners. This means that people feel and think the same way as the speaker during conversation. The same goes for dancing, playing or acting. So if people yawn during your presentation, that means you are bored with your own speech as well.

How to make your speech lively and engaging? Start by sharing your own experience, it is very important to keep your attention and involve your audience in listening, thinking and feeling the same as you. People love stories, they would love to know what happened to you to someone else, no one except you know. You will also look and sound more authentic when talking about yourself.

How to keep the audience's attention throughout the presentation

To keep people involved in your presentation, ask questions from time to time. And do not hurry to answer. Let them think and find the answer for themselves.

The questions can even be rhetorical. Your goal is to make the audience believe that they are developing your speech with you. And with the help of questions, they will be interested in it.

People like that feeling when they come up with something, it's like watching or reading a detective. A good author will have you guessing who the killer is at the right time. This is why the reader will appreciate their intelligence brilliant and will share this book with others.

So don't give all the answers at once. Let people think for themselves. Ask first, then click on the slide with the answer. Don't be lazy, play with the audience. They'll sit like kittens waiting for the next time you ask them for their opinion.

What makes a good design for a presentation?

Good design is always laconic. To make your storyline visual, don't be afraid to be metaphorical. Don't forget about the unified presentation style and color scheme. Align all the objects on the slide to a grid. Use contrast every now and then to add interest to your speech.

For your slides, you can use:

NB! The font size for the slides is important. It depends on how many people will watch your presentation at the same time. Make sure everyone in the room can see the details on your slides.

Types of slides and their goals

Any presentation can be reduced to 15 slides, which only makes it better. Any slide can only have one of the following 4 goals.

#1 INCITE THE SPEAKER TO SPEAK. THIS IS THE SLIDE-PROMPTER

Contains a short sentence or image needed to cover the question in 3-5 minutes. When creating this slide, think about its format: will your audience hear or read the presentation without problems? Such a slide can be misunderstood without a speaker.

#2 IMPRESSION THE PUBLIC AND INVOLVE EMOTIONS. THIS IS THE WOW-SLIDE

People should want to take a photo of it, share it on Twitter, or just save it. It's always an emotional slide. Here you can talk about the feelings you want people to have: “Oh, it's me”! or "How cute!" or "This is exactly what I need".

Your presentation should have a minimum of two wow-slides: one at the beginning and the second - at the end, near your solution to the problem.

# 3 EXPLAIN THE COMPLICATED DATA. THIS IS THE SMART SLIDE

No one likes it when the presentation is only creative and brilliant. It should also be mixed in with a tiny bit of boring facts. Smart slides should be informative, add some diagrams or diagrams. Without images.

# 4 CONVINCE THE PUBLIC BY COMPARING ARGUMENTS. THIS IS THE DARING SLIDE

This is the most important slide. You should have a bunch of such slides in your presentation, especially in the last part with solutions. Add comparisons, a description of the service or a review brief. This is your last chance to convince your audience that you are cool.

Watch any presentation. If the slide can be assigned to any of these categories, it will work. If the slide is somewhere in between, it is useless. Some slides can help you change the subject or ask a question, but you can usually do without them.
