The last major version of WordPress 5.0 was released today, unlike previous versions. This is a major update, because in this case we are leaving version 4 to 5. This generally includes big changes on the functionality side, and WordPress 5.0 will not be. exception.

In this tutorial, we will explore what are the new features of WordPress 5.0.

The history of WordPress 5.0 development

The version of WordPress 5.0 offers a major change in the design of the contents. This was introduced by the Gutenberg plugin, which was integrated into the WordPress core. However, as a reminder, the integration of this new editor was not unanimous close to the user community. In fact, many were opposed to it. The reason for this is mainly due to the almost complete change in the design of the contents.

WordPress 5.0 offers a much more structural and functional approach. It is no longer simply a matter of writing contents, but it's also about designing that layout. Anyone who has previously been accustomed to the different shortcuts available on WordPress 4.9.x and earlier will very quickly be confused.

The development team has therefore tried over the months to improve this new editor which is supposed to represent the future of WordPress, and we will tell you in this test, if their efforts have been successful.

Test of the new version 5.0 of WordPress: Installation & First Steps

We will install WordPress version 5.0 and explore the various new features of this version. The home page will allow you to discover the different modifications. This will also be the case, if you update directly from your dashboard. Remember to make a backup before any update.

So, we are greeted by Gutenberg who keeps talking about him. Our review will be much more focused on what it has to offer, given the bad reviews it has received. We will first start by presenting what it is (Gutenberg).

Presentation of Gutenberg

Gutenberg is a block-based content editor. It's no longer just writing, but writing in blocks that can be moved around and customized to your liking. Many consider this new editor to be similar to a Builder page. I would say that it is not as complex (halfway between the two), and its handling is rather easy (compared to the Page Builder).

Concretely what can a Gutenberg block contain?

Yes a block can contain text, but not only. A Gutenberg block can contain just about anything: audio player, video, link preview, tables, HTML element, etc. The main advantage here is that it is now possible to have reusable blocks. Like us, you have sections of your site that you want to duplicate on most of your articles. With reusable blocks, it will be possible.

The main purpose of Gutenberg blocks is therefore to make it easier for you to edit your content (page) while giving it an orderly and adjustable structure.

I find that the editing experience has changed a lot, compared to the versions offered as a plugin on the 4.9.x version of WordPress. But, my assessment may be different from yours.

Twenty Nineteen: the new default WordPress theme

Like every year, we were treated to a new WordPress theme. So here, we must obviously expect that the latter is compatible with Gutenberg.

This theme also offers a fairly clean layout, which will appeal to bloggers who like their work (readable and unencumbered).

I admit I have a certain preference for this theme, but I prefer to do more text with an active blog, having more content (more blocks).

Classic Editor: For those who do not want change

As I told you, there have been so many opponents of Gutenberg, that the WordPress development team was forced to come up with an alternative, which is no more and no less than our old editor.

The Classic editor is still here for a long time. According to WordPress, you will be able to continue using this editor until 2021. Personally, I prefer not to change anything in my workflow, I will continue to use the classic editor. However, I would really like to give Gutenberg a chance, because as a developer and user it can be a very interesting tool.

Finally

What do you think of WordPress 5.0? What do you think of Gutenberg? You can share your new experience in the comments, I know you will have a lot of things to say about it. If you liked this article, why not share it with your friends on social networks?
