How do podcasts work?

A podcast consists of an episodic series of audio files to which users can subscribe, either for listening or for downloading. Since WordPress allows users to subscribe to your blog via the RSS feedmakes it easier for users to subscribe to your podcast using RSS subscription on mobile devices.

There are specialized tools for listening and subscribing to podcasts, and the most popular of these is iTunes. By submitting your podcasts to the iTunes podcast directory, you can make it accessible to millions of users around the world.

Your users can easily subscribe to your podcast on their iPhone, iPod, iPad, and other Apple devices. We'll show you how to make your podcast available on iTunes later in this tutorial.

Your podcast will also be available for several other users (Android, Windows, and other platforms). They will be able to subscribe using a podcast application on their mobile devices and computers.

Setting up your blog to podcasting

The first thing to do is to have a great media hosting provider. Your podcasts are static media files, and submitting large files to your host will consume a lot of your resources.

Most podcast users use a different podcast hosting service for their files. It's the smartest, most efficient way to use a podcast.

Equipment

As your podcast is expected to evolve, you will be forced to use professional material to produce quality podcasts. However, as beginner blogger, thetool the most important you must have it is an excellent microphone.

Please, do not use your computer's built-in microphone to record your podcast. Your users will immediately notice the poor sound quality.

There are 3 choices you can make to choose a microphone for podcasters.

Here are some other equipment that you can also buy: microphone arm, anti-pop filter. You will also need to buy a professional helmet.

Recording a podcast

To record your podcast, you will need audio recording software. The best podcast recording software that is used by most podcasters is Audacity. It is  un open software source capable of recording professional quality podcasts (Such as in professional studios).

After installing the software Audacityyou need to create a new project in the File menu. To record your voice, just click on the record button.

Now you can save your podcast. 

Do not worry about awkward breaks, interruptions (the memory holes), or the faults you may make during the recording. You can resume recording as many times as you want.

You can also import audio files from the »menu files »Import«  And use them as background music.

Audacity is a very powerful tool and it is not possible for us to cover all of its basic features in this tutorial. However, the Audacy team offers a Wiki (documentation) extensive with detailed tutorials written specifically for the new ones podcasters.

We recommend that you go through these tutorials. It will take you some time to familiarize yourself with the software, but the effort will be worth it.

Once you've recorded your podcast, you'll need to export it. Most podcasters export their audio files in MP3 format, because they are lightweight files that have good audio quality.

You also need to be smart about the name of your podcasts. Here are some BPC- suggestions001.mp3 or BPC-episode-001.mp3. 

Publish your PodCast

The first thing you need to do is install and activate the Plugin Blubrry Podcasting PowerPress. It is developed and maintained by the same people who lead the Blubrry podcasting community and is delivered with many powerful features.

Once activated, you will see a menu PowerPress on your dashboard WordPress. Click on this link, and you will access the settings page of the Plugin. If you use Blubrry to host your files, you must click on the button to configure the statistics Blubrry and its hosting services.

By clicking on the button « Click Here to configure Blubrry Statistics and Hosting Services », a window will appear. In this window you will need to enter your hosting account, address Email et le mot de passe.

Once you are logged in, you will need to fill out the rest of the information on the settings page. Give a title to your podcast and fill in the field related to iTunes (description, category, subtitles, illustration). 

These fields will be used in the RSS feed of your podcast and on iTunes to save your podcast to their directory.

Remember to save your settings after you have finished making changes.

Add media on Blubrry

Follow this step if you choose to host your files on Blubrry. Now you have to send your file to your account Blubrry. Log in to your Blubrry hosting account then click on « Content >> Media files ». 

On the next screen, you need to click « upload new medium« . This will bring up a window where you can download your file (Your podcast recording).

After sending your file, you can now close the window.

How to add your first podcast?

To publish your first podcast, you need to access the location « Messages >> Add new ». On this page you will need enter a title and a description for the podcast in the edit box.

It is highly recommended to create separate categories for your podcasts. This way, your podcasts will be well organized. You will also be able to easily know the RSS feed of your podcast. To add your podcast file, scroll down and add the URL to the file.

For users of Blubrry, you just need to click on the folder icon just after the media url field (medium URL). By clicking on it, you will be able to access the different files you have sent on Blubrry.

For other users, as mentioned earlier, you will need to paste the url of your file. 

For example: http://www.my website.com / podcast / first-reading.mp3

Make sure the address is correct. Once you're done with your settings, you'll be able to publish your podcast.

Preview your podcast on iTunes

Now that you've set up your WordPress blog for podcasts, now is the time to post them on iTunes. Before sending, you might want to know how your podcast will appear on iTunes. For that, launch iTunes and go to " File >> Submit a Podcast » (Fillet >> Subscribe to Podcast) and enter the URL of the RSS feed.

The RSS feed URL might look like this:

http://www.my website.com / feed / podcast

If you do not have activated the permalinks on your WordPress blog, then chances are the previous URL will redirect you to the home page.

Once you enter the URL on iTunes, the latter will search for the RSS feed and display it. As you can see from the following screenshot, it will show description, caption, illustration, etc.

If everything is working correctly, that means you are ready to send your podcast on iTunes.

Send a podcast on iTunes

To send your podcast on iTunes, you need to download and install the latest version ofiTunes on your computer. Now run iTunes And click on the button iTunes Store (Shop iTunes), at the top right of the screen.

iTunes will give you access to the Store. Click on the menu of podcast, and scroll down to the "Podcasts" links section, you will see a link «Submit a podcast » (submit a podcast). 

You will need your Apple ID to submit your podcast to the directory iTunes. If you are not logged in, then iTunes will display a login window.

The first thing you will need is the RSS feed for your podcast. This URL may be different depending on the submission methods. Your feed will automatically integrate the necessary keywords on iTunes Store For your podcasts. After submission, your podcast feed will be sent for approval.

After approval, your podcast will be added to the directory iTunes and you will receive a confirmation email.
