When I started my blog, I made the mistake of not doing well define my niche. In fact, I defined it with one word: "coding". Defining a targeted niche for my blog with one word was not enough. Maybe for Internet pioneers it was, but currently, with millions of blogs competing, you need more than a name, a word, to define a niche.

I can not emphasize how important it is to define your niche. You must be able to know the purpose of your blog, which makes it so big and different from all other blogs. One word is not enough for that. I did not know where I had to start editing my blog, but I knew I had to change it.

I restored my page about it, changed my slogan, and spent a lot of time making a decision on the points I had to put up on my blog. Fortunately for me, the blog was still new and unknown, and I doubt that one person noticed my change of focus.

So, I could have spent this time building great content and promoting my blog. I hope you can learn from my mistakes.

Here are the main things you need to think about when defining your niche.

Choose a public, not a subject

This was my first mistake. When you decided what your blog was about, did you choose a theme like monetization, blogs, or easy money? Or, as in my case, the coding?

I did it. And it did not take me a long time to realize that it did not fit with my vision. Coding is an extremely broad topic, and I had no idea where I needed to write. Should I write for beginners? Or experienced coders? What type of coding could interest them in either case? What were their needs and how could I answer them?

Divi: The best WordPress theme of all time!

I did not even know my own blog! He was missing but. He had no target, he did not address all the needs. No wonder no one was reading it! Think of all the successful blogs you know: BlogPasCher, etc. It's not just about blogs that are about a topic, they are blogs for a specific audience.

Coding is a vast subject. Learning to write a code and want to apply its skills to real projects, is a set of aspects that can clearly define an audience.

  • Do not write something, write for someone.
  • Know how to make an update of your blog.
  • At every blog post you write, you need to ask yourself what is the purpose of this blog and how does it meet the needs of your audience.

Differentiate your blog from all others

When I clearly defined my audience, there was one thing I had in mind: how to differentiate my blog from everything else?

Easily create your Online Store

If you blog on blogging, you are competing with BlogPasCher. If you blog on coding like me, you're competing with Tuts +.

How do you want to stand out from the pack? You just do not have a chance. Unless you differentiate your blog.

Here is a little exercise : Derek Halpern taught me to identify the top ten blogs in a niche and for each one, it is necessary to explain in what way it is unique. Now you have to decide how your blog should adapt to this top ten, with its own touch.

As far as I was concerned, I had decided that my blog would focus on beginners with WordPress, guide people along their WordPress learning, while helping them implement their skills on real projects.

  • Identify how your blog is different from everyone else in your niche and how it can compete with others.
  • Ideally, choose a unique approach.

Where do you want your blog to be in a year?

Knowing how you want your blog to grow is something extremely useful for define your niche. It's not as important as the previous two points, but it really helped me. Think about the kind of products you will sell, what plugins there will be on your site, and even how you want your site to be viewed and designed.

I decided that over a period of one year, I will sell WordPress themes and plugins on my site. So, to prepare for this, I inserted a category for this purpose in my WordPress blog that I update regularly.

  • You will have an idea of what your blog will be once it reaches maturity.
  • You need to define a plan to monetize it, stay focused on the main topic, publish regularly, generate free traffic, and promote it on the internet.
  • You need to use this vision to get a better idea of the type of content on which you need to focus your blog today.

Strengthen the base of your blog

This advice applies to blogs already established or not. Websites are dynamic, you can change them at any time. So, mention this advice: define your niche and strengthen the foundation of your blog.
