When I started my blog I made the mistake of not doing well define my niche. In fact, I defined it with one word: "coding". Defining a targeted niche for my blog with one word wasn't enough. Maybe for internet pioneers it was, but right now, with millions of blogs competing, you need more than a name, a word, to define a niche.

I can not emphasize how important it is to define your niche. You have to be able to know the purpose of your blog which makes it so great and different from all other blogs. One word is not enough for this. I didn't know where to start for edit my blog, but I knew I had to change it.

I restored my page about it, changed my tagline, and spent a lot of time deciding what to put in my blog. Fortunately for me, the blog was still new and unknown, and I doubt that a single person noticed my shift in focus.

So, I could have spent that time building great content and promoting my blog. Hope you can learn from my mistakes.

But before, if you have never installed WordPress discover How to Install a WordPress Blog in 7 Steps et How to search, install and activate a WordPress theme on your blog

Then back to why we are here.

Here are the main things you need to think about when defining your niche.

Choose a public, not a subject

This was my first mistake. When you decided what your blog was about, did you choose a theme like monetization, blogging, or easy money ? Or, as in my case, the coding?

I did it. And it didn't take me long to realize that it didn't match my vision. Coding is an extremely large subject, and I had no idea where to focus my writing. Should I write for beginners? Or experienced coders? What kind of coding could interest them in either case? What were their needs and how could I answer them?

I did not even know my own blog! He was missing but. He had no target, it did not cover all the needs. No wonder no one was reading it! Think of all the successful blogs you know: BlogPasCher, etc. It's just not about blogs that deal with a subject, they are blogs for a specific audience.

Coding is a big subject. Learn to write a code and wanting to apply their skills to real projects, is a set of aspects that allows clearly define an audience.

lessons

  •  Know how to make an update of your blog.

Differentiate your blog from all the others

When I clearly defined my audience, there was one big thing I had in mind: how to differentiate my blog from everything else?

Discover What is the difference between a blog and a website?

If you are blogging you are competing with BlogPasCher. If you blog about coding like me, you are competing with tuts+.

How do you want to stand out from the pack? You are just out of luck. Unless you differentiate your blog.

Here is a little exercise : Derek Halpern taught me to identify the top ten blogs in a niche and for each one, it is necessary to explain why it is unique. Now you have to decide how your blog should adapt to this top ten, with its own twist.

As far as I'm concerned, I had decided that my blog was going to focus on beginners with WordPress, guide people through their WordPress learning journey, while helping them apply their skills on real projects.

lessons

  • Identify how your blog is different from everyone else in your niche and how it can compete with others.
  • Ideally, choose a unique approach.

Where do you want your blog to be in a year?

Knowing how you want your blog to grow is something extremely useful for define your niche. It's not as important as the previous two points, but it really helped me. Think about the kind of products you are going to sell, what plugins there will be on your website, and even the way you want your website to look and design.

I decided that over a period of one year, I will sell themes and WordPress plugins on my website. So, to prepare for this, I inserted a category for this purpose in my WordPress blog which I update regularly.

lessons

  •  You will only have an idea of what your blog will be like once it reaches maturity.
  •  You need to use this vision to get a better idea of what kind of content you need to focus your blog on today.
